Most patients experience some anxiety around dentist appointments, especially when heading into the office for something other than a routine cleaning. At Dental Implant Experts, we have noticed that the dental implant procedure is one that tends to cause quite a bit of worry for first-timers. That’s understandable; the first time for any dental procedure can be anxiety inducing.

At Dental Implant Experts, we offer sedation dentistry for those of our patients who experience higher levels of anxiety.  Not everyone needs it, though.  Whether or not sedation dentistry is an option you’d like to explore, here are some other things you can do to relieve any anxiety you have about your dental implant procedure.

Identify the root of your anxiety

From where does your anxiety stem? Have you had bad experiences in the past? Or are you simply fearful of unknown, perceived pain? According to Ellen Rodino, PhD — a California-based psychologist who has studied dental fear — most anxiety stems from a lack of control while they’re in the dentist’s chair. And it makes sense: you’re laying on your back with your mouth open, unable to really communicate, and it makes you feel as though you aren’t in control. But the reality is that it’s your body, and you can stop any procedure at any time. Take comfort in knowing that you have more control than you think you do. And furthermore, know that you are in capable, experienced hands.

Communicate your anxiety to your dentist

This is all routine to your dentist, so he or she may assume that you are completely comfortable, when you are experiencing a great deal of anxiety. The only way to overcome this disjointed interpretation of reality is to clearly communicate your anxieties ahead of time. They are nothing to be ashamed of: indeed, most people experience the same anxiety you’re experiencing. And if your dentist knows about it ahead of time, he or she can put procedures in place to ensure your continued comfort.

Bring someone you trust

If you struggle to clearly express your anxieties, and if you have a hard time speaking up for yourself in general, you can always bring someone with you who has your best interest at heart. They will be there to hold your hand during any parts of the procedure that make you uncomfortable, and you can rest assured that they will speak up for you if they see that you are struggling.

Seek distractions while in the chair

Many modern dental offices have televisions you can watch during your procedures. But even if they don’t, you can bring in your headphones and listen to music that will help you relax. Another idea you could try is a guided meditation during your procedure, something that will help keep you focused and relaxed while the dentist is working.
